UC Irvine Celebrates Opening of Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center
On Dec. 12, Chancellor Michael Drake helped officially open the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center, which promotes basic and clinical research and training in the field of stem cell biology. The grand opening – featuring lab tours and a reception – honored the Grosses, who donated $10 million to support stem cell research at UCI.
The center provides organizational structure and facilities for stem cell research, while offering premier graduate training, hosting guest researchers and annual meetings, and contributing to dialogue on the policy and ethical issues related to stem cells. Today, more than 60 UCI scientists use stem cells in current or planned studies.
The center has a 10,000-square-foot laboratory with $1.7 million worth of equipment critical to human embryonic stem cell research. UCI plans to construct a new building for the center that would house researchers, the laboratory, training facilities and clinical research space. UCI will apply to the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine for a facilities grant to build the structure when funds designated by Proposition 71 become available.
