Harvard Law Scholar Headlines UC Irvine’s MLK Symposium
Chancellor Michael Drake welcomed Harvard Professor Charles Ogletree to UC Irvine’s Crystal Cove Auditorium Jan. 18 as keynote speaker for the 23rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium. About 400 people attended the event, which celebrated King’s messages of equality and civil rights.
“We all remember Dr. King’s profound impact on everyday life,” said Chancellor Drake.
Ogletree, an expert on constitutional law, has written widely on race and class in America. His lecture focused on the nation’s progress towards integration and the role of civil rights leaders such as King, Charles Hamilton Houston and Thurgood Marshall in ending Jim Crow segregation.
The three-day celebration included a day of community service as well as a march and rally.
