UC Irvine Honors Inaugural Class of Nursing Students
Chancellor Michael Drake and more than 60 campus and community guests convened Jan. 9 at the Bren Events Center to honor UC Irvine’s inaugural class of nursing students.
The chancellor emphasized the essential role nurses play in healing the sick and acknowledged the local health care community’s strong support of UCI’s nursing program. He and program leaders Ellen Lewis and Dr. Frank Meyskens presented each student a certificate and pin.
“As a doctor, I have always respected my interactions with nurses,” Drake said. “We learned the value of working with a team, a group of people working together for the care of the patient.”
Also attending were representatives from Hoag Memorial, Mission, Kaiser Permanente, Anaheim Memorial, Saddleback Memorial and Orange Coast Memorial hospitals; as well as Ruth Ann Terry, executive officer of the California Board of Registered Nursing.
The nursing program enrolled 42 students this year with an average UC GPA of 3.83, and has received 320 applications for fall 2007. It offers a unique curriculum focused on research and emphasizes care to underserved communities.
