Newly Elected Officials Visit UC Irvine
On Jan. 25, Chancellor Michael Drake and more than 140 campus and community guests welcomed a group of newly elected officials to UC Irvine. The officials toured laboratories at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) and gained insight into the university’s positive impacts on the community.
“We have the best universities, the very best factories for innovation, of any place in the world,” Drake said. “Seventy five percent of UC Irvine’s graduates live in Southern California, so we are making major contributions to the local work force.”
One of UCI’s many cutting-edge research facilities, Calit2 promotes collaboration among faculty, students and industry partners to address topics such as transportation, the environment, emergency management and global economics.
Guests included state senators Dick Ackerman and Lou Correa; assemblymen Jim Silva, Michael Duvall, Jose Solorio ’92 and Van Tran ’90; and local mayors and city council members.
