Interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce that Associate Athletic Director Paula Smith will serve as interim director of Intercollegiate Athletics effective Aug. 1, 2007. Paula came to UC Irvine in 2006 from UC Riverside, and is the associate athletic director and senior woman administrator to the NCAA and Big West Conference. In conjunction with the director of athletics, she provides leadership and assistance for the staff’s compliance with department, campus, conference, NCAA and government rules, regulations and policies. She also provides administrative supervision of several of UCI’s athletic programs and is a member of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics. Please join me in supporting Paula as she undertakes new challenges in her work.
Beginning Aug. 1, Bob Chichester will serve as special assistant to the chancellor and will work on projects associated with the NCAA review currently under way.
I have appointed a search committee charged with assisting me in identifying the most qualified candidates for the athletic director position. The committee will be chaired by Professor David Snow.
