Chancellor, Scholarship Winners Meet Dalai Lama

UC Irvine undergraduates Rajiv Ramdeo and Aswathi Sreedharan, recipients of the inaugural XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Scholarship, met with His Holiness the Dalai Lama Sept. 12, 2006, in Pasadena.

Accompanied by Chancellor Michael Drake and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Manuel Gómez, the group discussed spiritual life on campus with the Dalai Lama, who encouraged the students to study and practice ethics, peace and positive global relations.

Each student received a $7,500 scholarship and $2,500 funding to pursue projects related to ethics and leadership. Ramdeo will use the funding to expand a campus meditation club he started last year, and Sreedharan plans to organize a camp for student leaders to encourage unity and support worldwide peace.
