Chancellor takes coffee break with honors students
Chancellor Michael Drake joined students in the Campuswide Honors Program for their weekly coffee hour Jan. 11. While the honors students enjoyed their cup of Joe, the chancellor held an informal chat about everything from Anteaters basketball to “30 Rock.”
“I’m just here to say hello and tell you what a successful program this has been for us,” Drake told the students, who filled the Chancellor’s Club Honors Center – also known as The Locus, in Student Services II. “It’s great to see how students mature through the program. It’s a separate home on campus.”
Campuswide Honors Program has about 650 members who make up approximately 4 percent of the student body. The program offers them the best of both academic worlds – the rigor and personal attention of a selective liberal arts college and the opportunities of a top research university.
Held every Friday, the coffee hour is a way to bring the students together from all over campus, says Lisa Roetzel, the program’s associate director. Each week features a short program such as a talk on studying abroad, and once a quarter the students invite faculty members to discuss their research, academic interests and experiences.
