Talk by U.N. Adviser Launches Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellows Series
On Wednesday, Nov. 8, Chancellor Michael Drake welcomed Dr. David Hamburg to UC Irvine’s Beckman Center as the first speaker in the 2006-07 Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellows Series. The annual lecture series brings distinguished scholars and thinkers to campus to share their perspectives on the challenges of living in an increasingly interdependent world.
Hamburg is a noted psychiatrist and has worked to promote peace and democracy globally. His lecture focused on ways the international community can work together to prevent genocide. In particular, Hamburg discussed how the conflicts in Bosnia and Rwanda can inform the international community’s response to the current crisis in Darfur.
The Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellows Series continues throughout the year, with lectures by such renowned figures as the E.L. Doctorow, author of the best-selling novel The March; and Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland and U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Dr. David Hamburg, international policy adviser to the United Nations and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, speaks at the Beckman Center to launch the 2006-07 Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellows Series.
