OC Black Chamber Honors Chancellor
On Aug. 19, 2006, more than 800 guests convened for the Orange County Black Chamber of Commerce’s 15th Annual Awards Banquet, during which Chancellor Michael Drake received the 2006 Community Leadership Award.
Drake spoke to an Anaheim Marriott audience that included Dennis Trinidad, the governor’s small business advocate; California Secretary of State Bruce McPherson; Congressman Ed Royce; and a host of other community and business leaders. He discussed his first year as chancellor and UC Irvine’s positive impact on Orange County.
“He was for real,” said Bobby McDonald, chamber president. “The community at large got a chance to hear the chancellor as he really is.”
Other UCI affiliates receiving awards included Dr. Melissa Welch ’81, AETNA’s senior medical director for Northern California; Orange County Sheriff Lt. Valna Wilson ’79; and Ingrid Johnson ’81, Council of African American Parents co-founder.
