Chancellor Drake Helps Inaugurate Chemistry and Physics Research Center

Chancellor Michael Drake joined 100 celebrants Oct. 1 in inaugurating Chemistry at the Space-Time Limit, a new UCI research center funded with a $20 million, five-year grant from the National Science Foundation. Led by scientists from UCI’s School of Physical Sciences, the center aims to record the inner workings of molecules as they undergo chemical change – one event at a time, one molecule at a time. Success would greatly accelerate the pace of nanoscience, which is driving the miniaturization of technologies ranging from computers to radios to satellites.

The event was attended by CaSTL researchers and their groups, faculty, students and campus administrators, as well as many outside visitors from government and industry. Center director V. Ara Apkarian gave a talk illustrating the science the center has proposed to accomplish, with examples of work achieved by each of the seven principal investigators. Entertainment was provided by the faculty jazz group Innovations.
