Chancellor Drake Opens Dedication Ceremony for Cicerone Field
May 19 was an exciting night for UCI baseball. The evening began with a dedication ceremony at Anteater Ballpark to name the baseball field after Chancellor Emeritus Ralph J. Cicerone. President of the National Academy of Sciences since 2005, Cicerone was honored for bringing the baseball program back to UCI Intercollegiate Athletics after budget cuts had eliminated the program in 1992. With attendance setting a season-high record, fans included friends and family of the Cicerones, University of California, Irvine Foundation board members, faculty, staff and students.
Chancellor Drake welcomed the crowd and, along with Athletics Director Mike Izzi, presented a customized Anteater baseball jersey to Chancellor Cicerone. The evening ended with No. 1 ranked UCI coming from behind to beat UCLA 5-4 in 10 innings.
