Chancellor Drake Announces Cicerone Graduate Fellowship
On May 19, Chancellor Michael Drake attended the Discover the Physical Sciences breakfast lecture at the University Club to announce the creation of the Ralph J. & Carol M. Cicerone Graduate Fellowship in Earth System Science. The fellowship was created by the Cicerones to provide a doctoral student with support for innovation and discovery in studies related to Earth system science.
Ray Anderson, a graduate student working with department chair Michael Goulden, will receive the inaugural award. Endowed at $200,000, the fellowship was made possible by gifts from the Cicerones and other donors. Proceeds from the endowment will provide Anderson with one quarter of funding to study the effects of climate on the forests in Southern California’s mountains. The announcement followed a lecture by Professor Michael Dennin entitled “Foams and Superheroes: Physics of the Ordinary and Extraordinary.”
