Chancellor Drake Addresses Global Health Symposium on Malaria
On. Nov. 21, Chancellor Michael Drake welcomed a distinguished audience of world-class scientists and key members of the global health community to “Malaria in the 21st Century,” a daylong symposium at the Beckman Center. Drake spoke about what UCI is doing to eradicate malaria – acknowledging the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s generous support – and introduced Professor Anthony James, who gave a talk on his genetic-modification research.
James also led a panel discussion with scientists and public health officials from around the world to shed light on future prospects for containing malaria. He teamed with Professors Guiyun Yan, Dr. Frank Meyskens, Dele Ogunseitan and Joe DiMento to organize the event, part of a series titled “Toward a Sustainable 21st Century” hosted by the Newkirk Center for Science & Society and the Program in Public Health.
