Chancellor Drake Presides Over Graduate Student Commencement
Chancellor Michael Drake joined 3,000 faculty and staff members, graduate students, and their friends and families June 7 at Bren Events Center for the 2008 Graduate Student Commencement. This was the first time UC Irvine has held a separate commencement ceremony for graduate students.
Chancellor Drake welcomed guests; conferred more than 500 Ph.D., Ed.D. and master’s degrees; and introduced the keynote speaker, Arden Bement, National Science Foundation director. The ceremony also featured a procession of faculty and students in regalia; the national anthem sung by Annabelle Belcher, doctoral candidate in biological sciences; comments by UC President Robert Dynes; and a student speaker, Melissa Bruninga-Matteau, doctoral candidate in humanities.
