Presidential Campaigns Focus on Asian, Pacific Islander Americans at Town Hall
Chancellor Michael Drake welcomed more than 1,000 guests May 17 to the Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAVote) Presidential Town Hall at Bren Events Center. The first-of-its-kind event was sponsored by APIAVote, a national organization that encourages participation by Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in the political process.
Sen. Hillary Clinton appeared by way of satellite feed; Sen. John McCain was represented by Assemblyman Van Tran ’90; and Sen. Barack Obama answered questions via telephone. The event was emceed by actress Tamlyn Tomita and included speeches by congressmen Mike Honda and Xavier Becerra; work sessions on healthcare, immigration reform and education; and dance performances.
